During World War II, the airport was converted for military use, though also experienced damage from bombings. After the war, *Frankfurt-Rhein/Main Airport became a civil airport with several improvements made for jet carriers. By 1958, it became an international airline hub with an additional terminal and runways added through the decades. Today it serves over 64 million passengers.

Terminal 1 also includes a bus station and is the hub for Lufthansa. Terminal 2 was opened in 1994 and divided into concourses D and E. Both terminals are connected by the Sky Train monorail and shuttle buses.
