History of the Museum of Natural History

The Museum of Natural History was housed in a building dating back to 1760 that served as a courthouse. Converted into a museum in 1876, this establishment houses collections made by the naturalist Charles Alexandre Lesueur and strongly degraded during the Second World War. Following the bombings of 1944, the south wing of the museum was completely destroyed and never rebuilt. Later, the architect Auguste Perret wanted to destroy the establishment in its reconstruction project downtown. Having been the subject of several classification orders as a historical monument, the museum reopened in 1973. The museum was also completely refurbished in 2007.
