Schiphol Airport first began as a military airport during World War I in 1916. By 1920, the airport became a civilian airport with its first flight as a KLM flight from London to Amsterdam. During World War II Schiphol Airport was heavily bombed and only used for emergency landings. After the war it was restored and became the primary airport of Netherlands by 1949. In 2017, Schiphol Airport served 68.4 million passengers.
