Located 15 kilometers south-west of the city of Aix-en-Provence and 20 kilometers north of Marseille, Aix TGV station was commissioned in 2001. It is part of the line connecting Combs- the City and St. Louis.
The history of the Aix TGV station is part of that of the LGV Méditerranée. The service to this city forced the SNCF to change the route of the LGV, hence the location of the station to 16 kilometers. The mayor of Aix-en-Provence, Jean-François Picheral, had supported the development of a Europole, which the Juppé government refused. The project was relaunched in 1997 and started with the renovation of existing lines. The construction of Aix TGV Station was entrusted to SNCF, Réseau Ferré de France and Eiffage Construction Métal. These organizations called on the services of architects Jean-Marie Duthilleul and Étienne Tricaud. The station was finally inaugurated on June 10, 2001, and its use quickly exceeded the expectations of the SNCF, as it avoids users to go to Gare Saint-Charles. The site was improved in February 2005.
The Aix TGV station is 190 meters above sea level on the Arbois plateau. Close to the town of Vitrolles, it straddles the town of Aix-en-Provence and Cabriès. A sales area open daily is located in the passenger building. The reception and a catering service are located on the west side. The north side is reserved for departures. As its name suggests, the Aix TGV station is only served by high-speed trains, connecting Paris - Marseille and Nice or Toulon, but also Nice, Lille, Rennes or Dijon. During the summer, it welcomes Thalys TGV from Amsterdam. Since December 2013, the TGV Madrid - Marseille passes there.
